Intent
The History curriculum at WDAT is taught through a termly topic, and consists of a planned sequence of lessons to help teachers ensure they have progressively covered the skills and concepts required in the National Curriculum. Our curriculum aims to develop historical skills and concepts which are transferable to whatever period of history is being studied and will equip children for future learning. These key historical skills and concepts, which are revisited throughout different topics, are: Historical Interpretations; Historical Investigations; Chronological Understanding; Knowledge and Understanding of Events, People and Changes in the Past; Presenting, Organising and Communicating. 

Implementation 

In order for children to gain the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need to succeed in history, lesson content is taught across the WDAT in consideration of the Teaching and Learning strategy. To build a breadth of knowledge, children are given opportunities to work with knowledge organisers, revise and use facts, and frequent check-ins opportunities take place to ensure children have remembered and understood the importance their learning in developing their historical understanding.  

Historical skills underpin the learning and allow children to take ownership of their historical understanding, using enriched and progressive vocabulary. Through the quality first teaching of History, we will see the impact of the subject in several ways. Through pupil voice, children will be able to talk about the skills and knowledge they have acquired.  

Children will be engaged in History lessons and be curious to know more and ask questions about the past. As historians, children will learn lessons from history to influence their interpretation of the world we live in and understand why the world is the way it is as a result.  

Our history curriculum enhances the children’s understanding of their personal and local identity as well as encouraging them to consider the importance of celebration, culture, diversity and inclusion in Britain and beyond.  

Impact -  

Through the quality first teaching of History, we will see the impact of the subject in several ways. Through pupil voice, children will be able to talk about the skills and knowledge they have acquired.  

Children will be engaged in History lessons and be curious to know more and ask questions about the past. They will demonstrate a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world and be able to discuss and consider concepts.
