Common Misconceptions - Place Value That estimations are good guesses and are unlikely to be the exact answer.as this would suggest that there would be no need to estimate. That only the digits 0 – 9 are used to make all other numbers and the value of the number is dependent upon the places that they hold in a number. When making complements to 100 – children will often give responses that make a total of 110 and they need to understand that the ones need to add to 10 and the 10s need to add to 90 – ie the complement to 100 of 67 is 33 Common Misconception - Properties of Shape What do we mean by a 2D shape and a 3D shape – 2D just have length and width and 3D have length, width and breadth That 2D shapes are only found as a face of a 3D shape. (You are not able to hold a 2D shape.) That 2D shapes that have all sides the same size, all angles the same size are regular and others are irregular. That it doesn’t matter in what orientation a shape is, it is still that shape according to properties, ie a square or ‘upside down’ triangle etc. |
