Common Misconceptions – Fractions That fractions are something different to a number That to find fractions it is important that they are equal parts – related to the denominator That equivalent fractions are not equal That any fraction placed on the number line has to be placed in the right position – ie 1 ½ is exactly half way between 1 – 2 etc. Common Misconception – Measures – Mass/Weight and Volume/capacity They get confused with the different measures ie Kilograms, litres, metres That there are 1000ml in a litre and 1000g in a kilometre and there are 100cm in a metre (1000 metres in a Kilometre) That different shaped vessels may have the same capacity – ie a long thin tube will hold the same amount of liquid as a short but wider receptacle That smaller items can be heavier than large items
